01|06|2010 : a New Fall Records
You may have noticed Fall Records hasn't done much lately. Our last actual release came out over 2 years ago. Many of the bands that have helped gain Fall Records some noteriaty have moved on to bigger and better things, as they should. The somewhat "traditional" model of releasing records hasn't been too sustainable in the long run and this made it virtually impossible for us to support our bands in the way we would have needed to for them to reach the level of popularity they have reached at bigger and more established labels. That's how it goes.

So, since the "traditional" method of releasing records doesn't work for us we are going to change how we release records.

Starting this month or possibly early next month (date not yet set) we will release an album from a great Baltimore band (it's a secret still). This album will be released via digital methods that we are all familiar with and also will be released digitally in the fallrecords.com store.

The point I am slowly getting to is you will be able to pay whatever you would like for the download available on the fall records site. I know radiohead did this already. However, we will be doing this with all new releases. It's an experiment. If it goes well we would like to release a new album every month. I don't know how long we will leave this "choose your price" option available for each release it all depends how it goes.

Why? You might ask.

Besides the reasons I listed above I think this provides the most opportunities for all the bands who's albums we will be releasing and for the label as a whole. If it works, it will help bands get noticed. There music will be instantly accessible to anyone that wants it and hears about it. We will be working with bands that want to grow, want to tour and I think this will help them get there.

What about actual CD's and records?

To go along with the releasing of digital albums we will start by making available physical cd's via the website and to stores that want them. The goal is to create interesting, hand-made (in most cases) packaging that some people will want to buy. Also, if this works I would LOVE to release Vinyl versions of our releases for those, like myself, that prefer to buy their physical albums in that format.
