Attempting to win the DIY-Artist-of-the-Millennium award, Krist Krueger (a.k.a. Southerly) has decided to follow up 27 months of touring via automobile as a solo artist, by re-releasing his debut LP on Fall Records. Recently dubbed ‘a one man musical army’ by Skratch magazine, Southerly is not what you’d likely expect from your run-of-the mill singer-songwriter. His offerings include signs of great craft while finding a way to stray far outside the traditional verse/chorus structures often dictating the final product of too many modern artists. Still, Southerly is able to avoid the being lost in obscurity by bringing you in with his uniquely memorable style and sense of charm.

Southerly began as many musical projects do, in a basement and bedroom, this one in 2003. Touring both solo and now in 2006 as a full band Southerly meddles with both Antifolk, Rock and Alt Country roots while taking cue’s from old-timers the likes of Woody Guthrie, Jimmie Rodgers and Bill Monroe with his gypsy-like touring habits. Proving to be one of the most dynamic and daring artists to emerge in recent times, “Southerly is unlike anything I've ever heard before, without being so experimental that it's unlistenable”, from SarahSaturday.com.

Southerly’s new album, Best Dressed And Expressionless features an array of players including Ryan Heise (System and Station), Cory Gray (Desert City Soundtrack) and Andi Camp (Andi Camp). Originally recorded in April 2004 at Haywire Studios (Portland, OR) by Robert Bartleson (Wilco, Desert City Soundtrack) and produced by both Bartleson and Krueger. BDAE is a concept album about death and coping, dedicated to three close friends and Krueger’s grandmother who all passed away in 2003. The album features four “Accidentals”, one for each person passed on and personalized for each individual.

Southerly succeeds by continuing to write interesting yet cohesive songs. Upon first listening you can never really be sure where any given song will take you next. It’s a refreshing change in the world of chord strumming solo artists that are popping up from every bedroom across the country. The Pulse summed it up quite well when they said BDAE was “firmly rooted in acoustic guitars and folk, while sidestepping the usual pitfalls of folk-rock.”
